I'm active duty military about to get out of the service and I have a big interest in becoming a civilian firefighter in Massachusetts. I've tried to talk to contact the fire department near where I used to live unsuccessfully, and I'm just wondering if anybody knows what I will need to do or if you have any pointers on what I should do to up my chances of being hired once I get home.

Being a vet should give you a step up on the competition. Make sure you are in your best physical condition. I believe there is written test as well as a physical one. See if you can get a copy of one that has been used or a book that covers the kind of questions that are asked. Good luck.

I was in the same boat as yourself. Try going in person. I did this, and it helped somewhat, but also try your county's website. If you have a county personnel board, ot should have listings of public service openings. That is how our's works. Your veteran's status will give you a big step up over everyone else short of already being certified firefighters. As everyone has said, try to get with a local volunteer department. You will get some good training, some good experience, and you will be able to see if its for you or not (not saying it isnt). Yes being in very good physical condition will help tremendously. Most departments now require you to have atleast EMT-B with some requiring EMT-P. Having atleast basic should help out. I know in Alabama, if you are a paramedic, and you pass the written test and the cpat, you are automatically hired. I'm not sure of how helpful this will all be with you, but the best advice period is to just stick with it. Getting into the fire service is a drawn out process for some reason. Good luck with it!

I'm not American but this helped my sister who applied here in Australia. she joined the local volunteer brigade and got some skills that way. Also, first aid qualifications helped.

I think the best thing to do is to stay in great physical shape
